China's democracy hack adds to problem areas for NZ
Quick Glance: APT31: The Chinese Hacking Group Behind Global Cyberespionage Campaign
  • The United States and Britain took legal action and imposed sanctions on a company and individuals associated with a Chinese state-backed hacking group called APT31, allegedly involved in a comprehensive cyber espionage campaign.

  • APT31, also known as Zirconium, is purportedly led by China's Ministry of State Security and has targeted millions of people over more than a decade, primarily in the U.S. and Britain, including officials, lawmakers, activists, academics, journalists, and companies such as defense contractors and a U.S. smartphone manufacturer.

  • The group is linked to China's Ministry of State Security in the province of Hubei and is accused of suppressing critics of Beijing, compromising government institutions, and stealing trade secrets.

  • The U.S. Treasury Department and the British government have taken measures against the company Wuhan XRZ and seven Chinese individuals, including Ni Gaobin and Zhao Guangzong, who were allegedly involved in the activities of APT31.
