Earth has its warmest March on record, beating 2023's milestone
Quick Glance: Global Record: Warmest March Ever
  • Last month marked the warmest March globally on record and the tenth consecutive month with new temperature records for respective months.

  • According to a report from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the EU's climate monitoring service, global temperatures in March surpassed the pre-industrial average for that month from 1850 to 1900 by 1.68°C and were 0.73°C above the 1991-2020 average for March. The previous month also exceeded the previous March record by 0.10°C set in 2016.

  • The global average temperature from April 2023 to March 2024 is now the highest on record, standing at 1.58°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.

  • In Europe, temperatures in March 2024 were 2.12°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month, with significantly above-average temperatures observed in central and eastern Europe.

The home insurance market is crumbling. These owners are paying the price
Quick Glance: Rising Premiums: Challenges in the Home Insurance Market
  • The home insurance market in New Orleans is crumbling, leading to rising premiums. Alfredo Herrera, a local bank employee, faced difficulties after his insurer canceled his coverage. This situation is attributed to climate change and the more frequent and severe weather extremes it causes.

  • Many homeowners in Louisiana and other vulnerable areas have had similar experiences. The increasing insurance costs are due to higher expenses for insurers, including severe storms and higher replacement costs. This results in even homeowners in less risky areas paying higher premiums.

  • In some areas, insurers have stopped issuing policies due to climate change, resulting in limited options for homeowners. Additionally, rising costs for home replacements and challenges in obtaining insurance have led some homeowners to forgo insurance coverage.

  • Rising premiums are burdening homeowners like Diana Troxell in California, who are struggling to cope with significant premium increases. The situation has led to financial difficulties for some homeowners, forcing them to resort to state-supported insurance plans to obtain coverage.

Earth has shattered global heat records for the 9th straight month ...
Quick Glance: Earth Records Hottest February and Ninth Consecutive Record Month
  • Earth just experienced its warmest February, marking a monthly record for the ninth consecutive time, as announced by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service on Wednesday.

  • The relentless and exceptional global warmth, driven by human-caused warming and the El Niño climate pattern, has affected both land and ocean areas since June, raising concerns among scientists about the planet surpassing a critical climate threshold and the potential for an active Atlantic hurricane season.

  • The month's average global air temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius was 0.12 degrees warmer than the previous warmest February in 2016. The warmth of the past 12-month period is unprecedented in modern records, standing at 1.56 degrees warmer than preindustrial levels.

  • The new temperature records emerged just a month after the planet's 12-month average temperature exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels for the first time, leading scientists to worry about the increased likelihood of reaching tipping points with catastrophic consequences if the Earth's temperature remains near or above that threshold for extended periods.
