Quick Glance: Artemis I's Orion flies near to the moon before returning to Earth
  • December 5 (UPI) -- On Day 20 of the Artemis I mission, NASA's Orion spacecraft completed a close flyby of the moon as the capsule prepared to return to Earth.

  • The maneuver was the Orion spacecraft's closest approach to the moon to date, flying 79.2 miles above the lunar surface, and was the mission's final major burn.

  • Orion had been in far retrograde orbit, which is an elliptical orbit around the moon that Artemis 1 uses to test its many systems.

  • The maneuver takes place eight years to the day after NASA launched the Orion spacecraft for the first time.

Quick Glance: NASA's Artemis spacecraft has entered lunar orbit in an attempt to transport men to the moon.
  • The new Orion spaceship is on its first lunar mission, Artemis I, to demonstrate that it can transport astronauts on its next trip around the moon.

  • This new moon landing, scheduled for 2025, is just the beginning of NASA's plans to establish a permanent base on the moon and a new space station in lunar orbit.

  • The agency then intends to deploy astronauts to Mars.

  • Entering a cruise around the moon is a significant step forward in the mission.

Quick Glance: NASA delays launch of Artemis I lunar rocket due to engine cooling and other concerns; Friday "in play" for next opportunity
  • If NASA determines the rocket is ready, which is far from definite, the next flight window from Florida's Kennedy Space Center is Friday.

  • When the huge Space Launch System rocket finally takes flight, it will become the agency's most powerful.

  • Delays, according to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, are part of the "space business," especially when dealing with machinery as complex as Artemis 1.

  • The Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft "remain in a safe and stable configuration," according to NASA.

Quick Glance: Nasa stops the launch of the Artemis lunar mission due to technical issues.
  • The launch of NASA's Artemis lunar mission, scheduled for Monday, has been canceled.

  • The cause was mechanical issues with one of the rocket engines, according to the US space agency.

  • It had not yet attained the required temperature, spokesperson Derrol Nail stated approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled launch.

  • Nasa confirmed via Twitter about twenty minutes before the launch period that the launch is presently on unscheduled pause.
