Quick Glance: IRS implements permanent free tax return program, urges all states to participate by 2025
  • The IRS will make permanent the free electronic tax return filing system that it experimented with this year and is asking all 50 states and the District of Columbia to help taxpayers file their returns through the program in 2025.

  • The IRS tested the Direct File project for the 2024 tax season on a limited basis in 12 states for individuals with very simple W-2s, the employee’s wage and tax statement.

  • IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated that the IRS will release information later this year on the participation plans of states in the program for 2025.

  • Since the launch of the Direct File trial in March, more than 140,000 taxpayers have utilized the program to submit their tax returns, claiming over $90 million in refunds, according to agency officials.
