A person who has had Parkinson’s disease for 25 years can now walk again thanks to a neuroprosthesis

A person who has had Parkinson’s disease for 25 years can now walk again ...
Quick Glance: Brain Implant Enables Parkinson's Patient to Walk Normally Again
  • The treatment stopped the trembling and sudden stopping that affects many Parkinson's patients, including Marc - and now, when the device is switched on, his gait looks almost normal.

  • Image caption: Marc can now walk for a mile.

  • Marc maintains control - his brain gives the instructions - but the epidural implant adds electrical signals for a smoother end result.

  • Neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch, who implanted Marc's device almost two years ago, mentioned that the technology and procedure are similar to those that have helped some spinal injury patients for many years - but it was the first time for Parkinson's disease, although other teams are exploring different techniques.
