CDC warns of increase in bacterial illnesses that can lead to meningitis
Quick Glance: Rising Incidence of a Rare Bacterial Disease in the U.S.
  • U.S. health officials are raising concerns about a rise in uncommon bacterial infections that can result in meningitis and potential fatalities.

  • In the past year, the U.S. reported 422 cases - the highest number in a year since 2014. With 143 cases already reported this year, it seems likely that the infections will surpass those of 2023, according to the CDC.

  • The bacteria have the capability to trigger a severe inflammation of the brain and spinal cord known as meningitis, manifesting symptoms like fever, headaches, stiff neck, nausea, and vomiting. While antibiotics can be used to treat the infection, prompt intervention is crucial. It is estimated that 10% to 15% of infected individuals succumb to the illness, and survivors may experience hearing loss or limb amputations.

  • Preventive vaccines for meningococcal disease are available. Authorities suggest that all children should receive a meningococcal conjugate vaccine around the time they enter middle school to protect against the escalating strain. Additionally, individuals at a higher risk, such as those in outbreak zones or with specific health conditions, are advised to get vaccinated.

Older adults should get another COVID shot this spring, CDC says
Quick Glance: Why Older Adults Require an Additional COVID-19 Vaccine
  • According to new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults should receive the COVID-19 vaccine more frequently than previously recommended. Individuals aged 65 and older are urged to get another vaccine dose in the spring or at least four months after their last dose.

  • The decision is based on data presented by CDC scientists showing current high hospitalization rates for COVID-19 among seniors, with the biggest spikes occurring in those aged 75 and older. A significant portion of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are among people over 65 years old.
