Texas sues Biden admin for requiring abortions in medical emergencies
Quick Glance: Texas sues the White House over its instructions on enabling emergency abortions.
  • Texas sued the federal government on Thursday over new Biden administration instructions urging hospitals to provide emergency abortions despite of state laws against the procedure.

  • The lawsuit centered on Monday's guidelines, which stated that a federal law protecting patients' access to emergency treatment allows doctors to conduct abortions when they believe a pregnant woman's life or health is in danger.

  • HHS stated that the guideline issued by its US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services office was not new policy, but rather reminded doctors of their obligations under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.

  • Approximately half of the states are anticipated to restrict or prohibit abortions.

Ex-US marine sentenced to nine years for California abortion clinic attack
Quick Glance: Former Marine sentenced to 9 years in prison for firebombing California Planned Parenthood clinic
  • A former marine was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Justice Department on Monday after using a Molotov cocktail to attack a Planned Parenthood clinic in Costa Mesa, California. Chance Brannon, along with his co-defendant Tibet Ergul, plotted attacks on the clinic and a potential target on the power grid in 'furtherance of a race war.'

  • Brannon, 24, pleaded guilty in November 2023 to being involved in a conspiracy, malicious destruction of property by fire and explosives, possession of an unregistered destructive device, and intentionally damaging a reproductive health services facility in violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.

  • Planned Parenthood clinic attacks were abandoned due to law enforcement actions. Brannon was motivated by neo-Nazi ideology and planned further violent attacks. The National Abortion Federation reported a sharp increase in violence at abortion clinics in 2022.

  • Brannon and Ergul also had plans to conduct an attack using a remote-detonated device during an LGBTQ+ pride event at Dodger Stadium, but were arrested two days prior. Before the arrest, Brannon even planned to rob Jewish individuals living in the Hollywood Hills.

Quick Glance: FSSAI Testing Spice Samples After Hong Kong, Singapore Product Recalls
  • Following the discovery of ethylene oxide in products from Everest and MDH in Hong Kong and Singapore, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has initiated the collection of samples of powdered spices from all brands across the country to assess their quality.

  • An unidentified official mentioned that India's food safety regulator has commenced sampling spices from all brands, including MDH and Everest, to ensure compliance with quality standards.

  • The official also highlighted that India's Food Safety and Standards Authority, operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, does not monitor the quality of spices exported from the country.

  • According to Maharashtra Food Assistant Commissioner Ulhas Ingwale, the authority received reports of pesticide residue in specific flavors of MDH and Everest, prompting considerations for sampling and pesticide testing.
