Quick Glance: Why Christians Wake Up Before Sunrise to Celebrate Easter
- On Easter morning, many Christians gather before dawn to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the son of God, as the sun rises. March 31 marks Easter Sunday this year for the majority of Christians worldwide and the tradition of sunrise services.
- Easter celebrations are not fixed to a specific date, but move between March 22 and April 25 based on a lunar calendar calculation. The biblical symbolism of the Easter worship of the early risers is rooted in the New Testament Gospels.
- It is unclear if the Moravian Church was the first to hold Easter sunrise services, but their annual tradition dates back to 1732. Moravians are known for their brass and wind instrument trombone choirs that accompany the Easter services.
- In addition to the traditional liturgies, the Easter sunrise service includes a silent procession to the Salem Moravian Graveyard, also known as 'God's Acre,' ending among the graves of past generations. Other Easter service traditions include Easter vigils and services in various styles at different locations.
